King Drain / Auto Drain Information
For the meter installation project, the City will install a drain on the resident’s side of the new ball valve if the resident elects. The City will also install a drain if there is one already on the resident’s system near the meter.

Currently, the residential connection (within the existing City box) has a stop and waste valve. A stop and waste valve when turned off has a weep hole that will drain the line to decrease the likelihood of freezing.

The new meter installation includes replacing this stop and waste valve with a new valve that does not have the weep hole. This valve will be in the locked meter box and not accessible to residents but will be kept open so as not to freeze the line.
To mitigate residents freezing their lines if they close their ball valve during the winter, the City has provided the option for the resident to have a King Drain style auto drain installed on resident’s side after their new ball valve. If the resident shuts off their ball valve the drain would allow water to be relieved.

Some facts regarding these drains are as follows:
The drain will only allow water to come from the adjoining low point portions of the line within the area. See the drain information from the manufacturer here.

-
The resident’s system will still require winterizing. The drain will not provide protection for the entire sprinkler system.
-
The drain is the responsibility of the resident and will not be maintained by the City.
-
It should be noted that these drains after some use may leak and need to be replaced (they are around $5).
-
If the resident no longer wants the drain, it can be screwed out and a plug installed instead.
-
Before construction begins a door hanger and small flag will be provided at each residence.
-
If the resident would like a drain the flag should be placed near their connection before construction begins.
-
Once the new meter has been installed, the City will not be able to install the drain and it will be the owner’s responsibility if wanted.
